In another installment of the Sundance Film Festival’s website’s ‘Meet The Artists’ segment, director Derek Cianfrance talks about his upcoming film “Blue Valentine” starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, which will be debuting at the festival.
Written and directed by Cianfrance, the film centers on a imploding couple, Dean and Cindy, with a child on the verge of a break-up who retreat to a motel to salvage their marriage — the picture then looks back on their 10-year relationship through flashbacks. Indie-rockers Grizzly Bear will be providing music for the film.
“‘Blue Valentine’ is the story of two people who are in love with each other,” explains Cianfrance. “And tells how they find each other and how they lose each other. It’s all about these dualities that happen to us in our lives. It’s about love and hate, it’s about fighting and fucking and it’s about dreams and realities. It’s really just about trying to make an honest portrait of a relationship.”
“I’m just fascinated by this idea of that when people are young, they can become anything, you know? You can be seven and become the president. Your story is not written when you’re younger and I think when people start making decision in their lives they find themselves with less choices as they get older. And so, I wanted to tell a story about that, about opportunity and more of entrapment.”
The video also provides the first footage from the film, albeit dubbed over by the interview with Cianfrance, shot with the beautiful backdrop of the New York skyline at sunset. We’ve already expressed our excitement for it in our Most Anticipated Films Of 2010 piece but damn this sounds great. The film is slated for a Spring release later this year, we’re guessing April/May.
Before that, “Blue Valentine” will first screen at Sundance on the 24th of January.
