Video game adaptations have had a tremendously mixed (and mostly bad) track record on the big screen, but it seems movie studios are eager to crack that nut. Perhaps it's because the line between movies and video games are forever blurring; just today it was announced that "Resident Evil 6" will feature over four hours of cutscenes. Anyway, it seems they are a hot item at the moment, with gaming franchises "Need For Speed," "Splinter Cell" and "Assassin's Creed" (with Michael Fassbender no less) all finding Hollywood homes in recent months. And now, another big title is on the way.
CBS Films has landed the rights to the cyberpunk, role-playing action game "Deus Ex." The game has been a fan favorite for a long time — its first iteration debuted on computers way back in 2000 — and has seen a number of sequels since. The movie version will use last year's "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" as the launch pad, with the story taking place in 2025, 25 years before the events of the first game, and it will tell the tale of "an ex-SWAT security specialist who must learn to embrace the high-tech prostheses that replace much of his body in order to unravel a global conspiracy that involves an attack on a biotechnology firm tied to developing human enhancements."
The game sold 2.5 million copies, which is likely why both the studio and videogame makers Square Enix are so hot on this, but as we know from the past, that doesn't always guarantee a quality film or an audience that will show up. No writer or director for this one yet, so it's probably a way off, but if you want get an idea of the world being brought to the big screen, check out the gameplay video below. [Variety]
