While it took them a few years, Hollywood has recently discovered all that dubstep has to offer — every third trailer from last year had a bass drop. Though it’s taken a bit longer for the powers to be to recognize EDM, or electronic dance music, 20th Century Fox has bought the rights and is twiddling the knobs on an untitled EDM-themed film built around one of its biggest stars.
Pitched as “‘8 Mile’ meets ‘Project X,’” the film will focus on three teens trying to gain access into Diplo’s own Electronic Music Festival (he will be executive producing the endeavor according to Pitchfork). With many mainstream artists poaching EDM DJs for their own hit songs it’s a no-brainer that studios would want to get in on the action. As it’s just the pitch that was bought, there’s no timeline on production, and no script has been written yet but both Andy Jones and Adam Weinstock will be starting work on their first draft shortly.
To be honest, we’re a little confused by the “Project X” namecheck, could the film be in the found-footage vein? Or is it merely a reference to the type of humor and the demographic they’re aiming for? All will be revealed in due time we’re sure so in the meantime, stock up on glitter and neon lights. [Deadline]
