After a difficult, fractured production that left many wondering if "Men In Black III" was gearing up to be a "Heaven's Gate"-style summer disaster, it seems everyone came through and put something together for the third and final chapter in the series. Or is it? With Sony rebooting "The Amazing Spider-Man" only five years after Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire's "Spider-Man 3" it's clear that in this day of do-overs and remakes, time is hardly an issue. And while this may be the last swing at the alien piñata for Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, the "Men In Black" franchise might still have a new life beyond the upcoming movie.
Catching up with MTV, director Barry Sonnenfeld talked about the production of the film, but more interestingly, revealed that rebooting the series is very much on the table. "The fantastic thing about 'Men in Black 3' is that it totally closes out the trilogy, it answers questions that you didn't even know you should be asking, it leaves you emotionally warm and sad and happy, and it could also reboot the franchise," he explained. "But I can't even begin to tell you how to interpret all of that. [Laughs] But I would say this: If your interpretation is that 'Men in Black 4' will only star the worm guys and Frank the pug, you are wrong."
So a Brolin-led franchise set in the '70s, maybe with Andy Warhol as his partner? We'd pay to see that. But seriously, if you thought Sony was going to let this cash cow disappear after the third installment in 2012, guess again. And we'd wager keeping "Men In Black" alive for a new series of films might fill out the supernatural blockbuster slot more easily than trying to get the forever gestating/never gonna happen "Ghostbusters 3" off the ground.
