Unless you’re a diehard “Simpsons” fan, you have to admit that the animated TV classic is showing its age. After three decades, it’s hard to get excited about the series, which feels like it’s run its course two times over. Combine that with the fact that “Futurama” has been off the year for over 5 years, and you see why there’s excitement surrounding Matt Groening’s upcoming Netflix series “Disenchantment.”
In the latest trailer for the series, it’s clear that Groening is going more for a “Futurama” tone than “Simpsons.” “Disenchantment” follows a young princess who finds herself on a bit of a quest of self-discovery as she deals with the aftermath of a failed wedding and her hard-drinking ways. She’s joined by a simple elf and a demon. Maybe it’s the funny jokes or the renn-faire version of David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel,” but Netflix’s latest series feels exciting and a return to form for the legendary creator.
The series stars the voice talents of Abbi Jacobson, Eric Andre, and Nat Faxon, as the three leads.
“Disenchantment” hits Netflix on August 17.
