Welcome to another addition of The Playlist Podcast, the show where we discuss film reviews, film news, industry insider baseball, and any other pertinent pop culture items that are worth discussing.
On this episode, I’m joined by Playlist Managing Editor Charles Barfield to discuss the recent news that Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige will be producing multiple TV series for Disney’s upcoming streaming service, starting with Loki and Scarlet Witch stand-alone shows (which Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, respectively, are slated to come back and play them).
There is a lot to unpack in this announcement, such as what will happen to Marvel TV, and the shows they currently oversee for Netflix (“Daredevil,” “The Punisher“), Hulu (“The Runaways“), and Freeform (“Cloak & Dagger“)? What will the Fox merger mean for the series possibilities (such as which “X-Men” characters they might bring into the fray)? Or – the most important thing for a more fair-weather Marvel fan such as myself – will these shows standalone as their own pieces of work, or will they play important narrative roles in the current string of MCU films and be necessary viewing for following along the overall story? We also touch on the kind of standalone shows that we would like to see (and unfortunately Rod couldn’t join us to pitch that “Hawkeye” show that we all know he is sitting on).
