It’s rare that a catalog leaving a streaming service generates major headlines, but then again, when that story involves two industry titans in Disney and Marvel, it’s going to grab attention. The mouse house indeed announced that they were in the process of pulling their titles from Netflix, essentially taking back control once the current deals end in 2019. Even more, they were going to jump right into the streaming game, launching an ESPN-focused service next year, with movie and television apps to follow in 2019. However, don’t think you’ll just pay one price to access Disney’s vast archives.

In a talk with analysts, the Disney CEO revealed that fans wanting a one stop shop for Marvel and “Star Wars” might be in for a rude awakening.
“There’s been talk about launching a proprietary Marvel service and ‘Star Wars’ service,” Iger said. “But we’re mindful of the volume of product that would go into those services. And we want to be careful about that. We’ve also thought about including Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ as part of the Disney-branded service. But there we want to be mindful of the ‘Star Wars’ fan, the Marvel fan, and to what extent those fans either overlap with Disney fans or are completely separate and incremental to Disney. So it’s all in discussion.”

It’s a hilariously awkward way of Iger explaining how he’s going to bleed consumers. Disney very well knows that any subscription service in a household is going to have a few different demographics tuning in, so there’s no reason why Pixar, Marvel, Disney Animation and “Star Wars” can’t all live in the same space, except for the greed of charging premiums for each one. However, investors probably love hearing that because they can just see the massive dollar signs that such a plan would generate. If Disney goes down that road, it would be a particularly cynical move that’s sure to piss off the “Star Wars” fan, the Marvel fan, and the Disney fan all at once. [Deadline]
