When “The New Mutants” finally gets released (and yes, we can now confirm it will get released in theaters), it’ll be almost three years after the debut of the first trailer. That has to be some sort of record, right?
According to Disney, the expected theatrical release of “The New Mutants” is now getting pushed back a fourth time. Or maybe it’s the fifth time? 25th time? We’ve honestly given up trying to keep track of all the drama behind this troubled production.
What we do know is that the trailer for this “X-Men” spin-off film was released on October 13, 2017. And the film? Well, Disney is now slated to release it on April 3, 2020. This most recent delay comes after the purchase of 21st Century Fox, which means that the Mouse House inherited a film that was supposed to be released in 2018 and has been nothing but trouble for its studio.
Now, after carefully going over the entire slate of films that Fox had planned before the merger, Disney has decided to delay the film from its latest date in August to spring 2020. This will likely allow for the studio to actually conduct those oft-rumored reshoots that have been talked about for well over a year now. Fox was supposed to conduct the reshoots, which was said to fix the teen superhero/horror film, and actually add a brand-new CGI character to the roster.
After the Disney/Fox deal was completed, many wondered what would happen to “The New Mutants,” with people speculating that Disney would either dump it on Hulu quietly, just to put it out of its misery, or actually release it in theaters and hope that there’s enough “X-Men” nostalgia to turn a tidy little profit. But no one really considered the third option, which is what the studio is doing, with delaying the film a number of months and likely making the film a legitimate theatrical release.

Of course, this delay will automatically get fanboys and fangirls wondering if Disney will use “The New Mutants” to introduce the “X-Men” characters into the MCU. The film was already supposed to be pretty disconnected from the previous Fox superhero films, and perhaps, Marvel Studios could rejigger it to include some MCU references? We’ll have to wait and see.
Either way, it’s official now — “The New Mutants” will arrive in theaters on April 3, 2020. Let’s see if it’ll finally stick to its date.
