Last April, we reported that Pedro Almodóvar was working on a new film with Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas. At the time, we knew the title and just a hint at what the plot was going to be. Even with just the minimal information, those three names are enough to get any film fan excited.
And with the new trailer for “Dolor y Gloria,” we finally get to see a hint at what they were working on, and it looks, as you might expect, incredible. The trailer doesn’t have any actual dialogue, instead, it features a series of scenes with a beautiful song in the background. However, through just the visuals, you get the sense of what Almodóvar is attempting to do with his latest film.

Antonio Banderas stars as a film director that is coming to terms with the various relationships in his life. There are hints of a strong relationship with his mother, both in the present day, as he cares for her and in the past, with the matriarch played by Cruz. There are also hints at some of the director’s loves, both as a child, discovering his sexuality, and as an adult. Needless to say, Almodóvar layers quite a bit just in the quick scenes shown over the course of a minute and a half.
“Dolor y Gloria” also stars Asier Etxeandía and Julieta Serrano. Almodóvar is no stranger to working with the same actors in multiple productions. Both Cruz and Banderas have worked with the legendary filmmaker numerous times, dating back to 1997 and 1982, respectively.
The film will debut in Spanish theaters in March, but there’s no release date known for “Dolor y Gloria” for the rest of the world.
