A new name has been added to the “Star Wars” franchise, and for those fantasy nerds out there it will be one you recognize. Dominic Monaghan recently announced his involvement with the newest “Star Wars” movie, the ninth in the saga series.
“The galaxy far, far away has had almost as much influence as the one I live in, so I am delighted to be involved,” Monaghan told Deadline this week. Considering Monaghan has a tattoo from “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” on his arm, it was perhaps only a matter of time before his fandom was fulfilled.
Frustratingly, not much more was revealed about his role in the upcoming film, leaving room for speculation to abound on the character he will play. Will he be a rebel alongside Finn, Rey, and Poe? Will he lend his voice to a new alien character? Or will he embrace his inner dark side? Only time and Disney will tell.
This casting news also means the actor will once again be teaming up with J.J. Abrams, director of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and co-creator of the stranded-on-a deserted island sci-fi/fantasy drama series “Lost” Monaghan starred in.
Of course, Monaghan is already a pro working with multi-billion-dollar franchises. Only 17 years ago he debuted on the big screen as the merry hobbit Meriadoc Brandybuck in “The Lord of the Rings,” surviving elaborate scenes, three movies, and the screaming fanbase. Whatever fandom ‘Star Wars’ throws at him, the actor should be prepared.
Still, it will be interesting to see how Monaghan adapts to this new adventure. Sure, we know he’s a veteran of the big leagues, but going from high fantasy to a sci-fi space opera with today’s CGI technology? We can’t wait to see how he fits in.
“Star Wars: Episode IX” is set to be released December 2019.
