With “Parasite” winning Oscars and “Squid Game” conquering Netflix, South Korean cinema is all the rage right now. While many cinephiles have long ago discovered the joy of South Korean filmmakers such as Bong Joon Ho, Lee Chang-dong, Hong Sang-soo, Park Chan-took, and more, the mainstream seems to be catching up pretty quickly. And Apple TV+ is hoping to capitalize on that with a new series from another great South Korean filmmaker, Kim Jee-woon, titled “Dr. Brain.”
As seen in the trailer for “Dr. Brain,” the series stars “Parasite” actor Lee Sun-kyun as a genius brain scientist who believes that he has cracked the code for hacking dead people’s minds and seeing their memories. He uses this technology to attempt to solve a mystery that may or may not take his procedure too far.
As mentioned, “Dr. Brain” comes from filmmaker Kim Jee-woon, who may will recognize as the director behind features such as “A Tale of Two Sisters” and “I Saw the Devil,” both of which should be required viewing for new fans of South Korean cinema. And if you’re a fan of the dark, mysterious tales of something like “Squid Game” or “Parasite,” it would appear you’re likely going to enjoy what the filmmaker has up his sleeve for “Dr. Brain.”
“Dr. Brain” debuts on Apple TV+ on November 3 in the US (November 4 internationally). You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis for the series:
The series follows a brilliant brain scientist Sewon (LEE Sun-kyun) who suffers a horrific personal tragedy when his family falls victim to a mysterious accident.
