Drew Goddard Drops 'The Martian,' But Fox Wants Matt Damon To Star

With Drew Goddard‘s plate full right now writing, executive producing, showrunning and directing Marvel‘s Netflix series “Daredevil,” and also now set to write and direct “Sinister Six” for Sony, you might have forgotten last spring that the filmmaker signed up to direct “The Martian” as his followup to “Cabin In The Woods.” Those superhero projects have forced Goddard to move on, but that’s not stopping Fox.

The Wrap reports that the studio is now looking for a director that will meet the approval of Matt Damon, who is being eyed to star. We’d guess the director will be the make or break deal in terms of getting the actor aboard. The movie is based on the e-book written by Andy Weir, following an astronaut stranded on Mars, who tries to survive long enough to chart a path back to Earth. Apparently, this is actually nothing like Alfonso Cuaron‘s film, though it is being described as a cross between “Cast Away” and “Apollo 13.”

In short: we’ll see. It looks like a few moves have to happen first before Damon signs his name to this one.
