Duncan Jones started his filmmaking career with a bang, helming two films that are were fairly well lauded, “Moon” and “Source Code.” Then, last year, he released the big-budget “Warcraft,” which was highly-anticipated but didn’t have the impact that he might have desired. The film was looked at as a disappointment while making a fair amount of money overseas. Then, the most recent film, Netflix Original “Mute,” was released and you probably didn’t even know about it. To say the film went under the radar is an understatement, as it was easily lost in the crowded field of about 400 other Netflix Originals released in that time frame.
All that being said, the director tweeted a tease about his next film, and it has been getting a lot of buzz. Yesterday, out of nowhere, Jones tweeted, “A little nervous about this, but hell, nervous is where the fun is! I’m going to be making a comic book movie next! A pretty special one. That’s the initial tease…Second tease to come in a few days!”
As you might imagine, Twitter detectives went nuts over this announcement. Will he direct something for Marvel Studios? Maybe, it’s one of Sony’s upcoming Spider-Verse films? Well, while we don’t know what it’s going to be, for sure, we do know what it WON’T be.
According to Forbes, we can now rule out anything upcoming from DC films. Their report suggests that, unless it’s a film that no one has any clue about, Jones will not be helming a new “Superman” film or “Green Lantern Corps.” Or anything by DC films, for that matter.
So what does that leave? Well, if you’re a person who likes to place bets, the safe pick is None of the Above. You see, it’s interesting that Jones said “comic book movie” and not “superhero movie.” With all the superheroes dominating the cinemas, it’s always the first instinct to assume that all comic books feature capes and superpowers. And while mainstream comics may feature a lot of those, that’s definitely not the whole medium.
However, if he is directing a superhero film, it could be one of those unannounced Marvel films like “Eternals.” Or perhaps, it’s the recently, unofficially announced “Silk” over at Sony. Regardless, it does seem like it’ll be announced soon, which can mean that we’ll learn more at San Diego Comic-Con.
Until then, speculate away!
