Last week, after filmmaker Duncan Jones teased a “comic book movie” for his next project, we pondered just what the director had lined up. We knew it wasn’t anything from WB/DC, and we were pretty sure the project isn’t some unannounced Marvel Studios blockbuster. So, we guessed that odds are, Jones’ next was from some sort of non-superhero work. And it appears we were right.
As promised, Jones released a second teaser on Twitter about the upcoming project. The short video shows the back of someone’s head as Jones can be heard narrating his thought process in picking his next project. He wonders if he should take a stab at a DC film or a Marvel superhero. He then remembers “2000 AD” and says that sounds like a better fit. He then removes his hat to show a blue mohawk, which could mean only one thing – Rogue Trooper.
And even though the name “Rogue Trooper” sounds like a horrible “Star Wars” spin-off film (let’s not give Lucasfilm any ideas…), the actual character and story, from the British comic “2000AD,” are much more interesting than you might expect.
“Rogue Trooper” is a comic that features the genetically-engineered titular character, known as a “GI” aka genetic infantryman, who is capable of withstanding toxic conditions on the battlefield. The story follows the battle between opposing forces on the planet known as Nu-Earth. It sounds like Jones will be able to make his own version of a superhero story, but with the backdrop of a war film.
As for any official news, that’s forthcoming, as the only thing we know for sure is Duncan Jones is involved. It’s safe to say that an official announcement should be around the corner, perhaps at San Diego Comic-Con.
