'Dune': Josh Brolin Says Denis Villeneuve's Oscar Snub Is "F***ing Dumb"

In case, you were living under a rock, the 2022 Oscar nominations were announced on Monday, earlier this week. Award nominations can be polarizing, and others get upset for people seen as getting snubbed. One major, eye-raising snub was on the movie “Dune.” The epic sci-film earned the second-most amount of nominations in total after “Power of The Dog.” Still, its director was not nominated, which has greatly upset and irked the always-outspoken Josh Brolin, who was one of the film’s many stars.

Brolin took to Instagram (see below) to express his frustration with director Denis Villeneuve not being rewarded with a Best Director nomination for his fantastic contribution to the success and artistry of “Dune.” While the sci-fi film has earned many award nominations, including Best Picture, Villeneuve didn’t earn a directing nomination prompting Brolin to post a video message on social media and vent.

Brolin was shocked about Villeneuve’s snub after congratulating the team for the ten nominations he began his diatribe. “The unbelievable, almost numbing, flummoxing I feel for Denis Villeneuve not being nominated for best director. It’s just one of those things where you go, ‘Huh? What?!’,” he said, sounding highly irritated.

“I don’t know how you get ten nominations, and then the guy who has done the impossible with that book doesn’t get nominated. It makes you realize that it’s all amazing, and then it’s all fucking totally dumb. So congratulations for the amazing accomplishments that these incredibly talented people have been acknowledged for because it’s all really, really dumb,” Brolin continued.

This isn’t the first perceived “snub” from the Academy for a genre film helmed by Villeneuve. “Arrival” was able to get both Best Picture and Best Director nominations, but Amy Adams was seemingly shut-out of the Best Actress race, despite being the beating heart of the sci-fi drama. That move was also seen as controversial at the time.

At the end of the day, Villeneuve is the kind of filmmaker that will continue to be in consideration for future projects, perhaps, even for the upcoming “Dune: Part Two.” While it’s certainly frustrating, it’s not the first or last time the Academy runs out of spots for Best Director for those that are deserving.
