Welcome to Blockbuster Limbo, that odd – and inevitable – period between the first press screening of a film and its theatrical release. Film critics got their first good look at “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” last night, and while the actual reviews are under embargo until April 24, that didn’t stop members of the press from sharing their initial reactions on Twitter. The consensus? ‘Guardians’ brings all the energy of the original film, perhaps with slightly diminishing returns. Here’s a quick sampling of what people had to say:
I say without hyperbole: #GotGVol2 is MCU at its very best. Grand adventure with intimate stakes. Uses every damn color in the crayon box. ?

Loved Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2. Surprisingly moving. Incredible visual effects and production design.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2. is very fun. Takes the EMPIRE "split up your characters" strategy. Drax is a hoot. Baby Groot steals the show

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is filled with tons of surprises and an unexpected amount of emotion. Another Marvel winner.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2 is a lot of fun. Action-packed & even more classic '70s/early '80s music cues.

Didn't love #GotGVol2 as much as the 1st but it's still super fun. Really enjoy spending time w/ this kooky family, especially Drax & Groot!

The other big reveal from the screening is an insanely high number of post-credits sequences. Fans of the Marvel universe are no stranger to a post-movie stinger, or, when a movie is really trying to build towards something, two stingers, but ‘Guardians’ takes this to a whole new level. According to ComicBook.com, the movie features no fewer than four post-credits scenes, with director James Gunn suggesting that there might even be one more (but who’s counting):
@screenrant Well, five, actually. ?

That’s… that’s a lot of post-credits scenes. Let’s pour one out for all the movie theater employees who will now have to stand awkwardly in the back of the theater with their cleaning supplies while people stay rooted to their seats. Regardless, though, it sounds like Marvel has another hit on their hands.
Here’s the full plot synopsis for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
‘Guardians’ will hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
Also: Come for the movie, stay for the not one, not two, not three, but *four* post credit scenes.
