Early Reviews Say Taron Egerton's 'Robin Hood' Is "Bloated," "Terrible," & "Hysterically Awful"

As we feared, the moment the first trailer began, the latest adaptation of the classic Robin Hood tale is terrible. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to many, especially after watching the action-heavy trailers that clearly showed a film where Robin Hood is basically a superhero. However, as early reviews start pouring in, it appears that Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx’s “Robin Hood” might be one of the worst attempts at the story in film history. And that says a lot.

On Twitter, the short reviews use descriptors like “hysterically awful” and “blows chunks,” which are par for the course with today’s modern social media snippet reviews. But if you’re looking for more nuanced, longer-than-a-couple-sentences reviews, the early word isn’t much better.

Variety:

If you’re a purist about Robin Hood, then you probably won’t go for ‘Robin Hood.’ It’s a let’s-retrofit-the-legend-for-the-kids movie, and it’s not shy about its fast and furious action-and-attitude makeover tendencies.

THR:

Leonardo DiCaprio can rest easy in the knowledge that this fiasco will come and go so quickly that few will remember that it even existed, much less that he produced it. In a just world, everyone involved in this mess would be required to perform some sort of public penance.

The Wrap:

Rife with stereotypes, a terrible script, and odd ‘300’-esque cinematography that just doesn’t fit, this is not only a film nobody asked for, but also one that nobody should be forced to endure.

The Guardian:

This bloated, featureless, CGI-heavy movie is not so much stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, as stealing from Guy Ritchie, Batman, Two-Face and a few others – and not giving back all that much to the audience.

Needless to say, the film most definitely earns its early 18% Rotten Tomatoes score (as of this writing). So, with “Widows,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” “Creed II,” “Green Book,” “The Favourite,” “Shoplifters,” and hell, even “Overlord” all in theaters this weekend, there are plenty of other options that are much better uses of your money. Even if none of those films seem interesting enough, and you still want to see beautiful people tell a classic story, why not go watch “A Star is Born” for the 5th time?
