We have only dipped our toes into the second-ever Marvel Studios TV series on Disney+ and already we’re talking about spinoffs of series that have yet to even air. That’s right, to keep the Marvel Studios/Disney+ TV train on track, there have to be a lot of superheroes on deck to get their own limited series, and it appears that the upcoming “Hawkeye” series is going to be the first to have a real spinoff, titled “Echo.”

According to Variety, Marvel Studios has brought in Etan Cohen and Emily Cohen to write and produce a new series titled “Echo,” which will be a spinoff of the upcoming “Hawkeye” series that stars Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld. As the title implies, “Echo” is actually going to focus on the character of the same name, played by newcomer Alaqua Cox. For those not familiar with the Marvel Comics universe, Echo is the codename for Maya Lopez, a young deaf hero that has the ability to perfectly mimic the physical actions of others after seeing them done once. Basically, she can watch a Bruce Lee film and do all of his moves instantly. Or, you know, watch Hawkeye shoot an arrow and do the same.

As mentioned, Cox plays the character of Maya Lopez in the upcoming “Hawkeye,” but it’s unclear what her role in the series will be exactly. There is one interesting aspect of Echo from the comics that could easily be used in the TV series. You see, in the comics, after Hawkeye gave up the Ronin identity (which he also used in “Avengers: Endgame”), Echo took on the mantle to become Ronin for a bit. Perhaps, in the TV series, we’re introduced to a version of Ronin that isn’t Hawkeye though is able to do all the same moves? Later, it is revealed to be Echo? We shall see.
Etan Cohen is a writer-director that is previously known for work on films such as “Holmes & Watson,” “Get Hard,” and “Men in Black 3.” Emily Cohen is Etan’s real-life wife, with only one IMDB listing under her name, as an animator on “Chowdaheads” in 1999. But we have to assume she’s a talented enough writer to land a Marvel Studios job, at least.
Clearly, “Echo” is in the early stages of development, with no clear release date in mind. Hell, “Hawkeye” doesn’t even have a real release date yet, though it’s expected sometime before the end of the year. So, maybe “Echo” could be coming in 2022? We’ll have to wait and see.
