Edgar Wright Will Only Do ‘Baby Driver 2’ If He Can “Make It Fun” To Direct

Yes, a sequel for “Baby Driver” has already been announced. And Edgar Wright has said that he’s written a script. But if you ask him if he’s going to make the film, it’s still not 100% certain. Why? Well, the filmmaker explains in a new interview with Cary Fukunaga (via Interview) that he’s only willing to tackle the project if he can make it fun for himself to do. And he’s not afraid to walk away if he’s not excited.

“If I did the [‘Baby Driver’] sequel—and in fact I’ve already written a script—I’d have to find a way to make it fun for me,” said Wright. “The idea of doing a straight Xerox is just not interesting because, as you know, these films take at least two years and in our cases, because of the pandemic, they took even longer. My rule of thumb is you have to really want to do it. We’ve both been in situations where we have walked away from a studio franchise movie because we weren’t feeling it. I know that we share many things in common, and that’s one of them.”

The last comment comes as an observation about how Cary Fukunaga walked away from making “It” because he didn’t feel like the changes the studio wanted to make were good. And Wright is also commenting on his own experience walking away from Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man” when he and the studio also had creative differences.

All that to say, it’s clear that Wright has written a script for “Baby Driver 2,” but he’s not exactly sure if he’s going to end up directing it. And if he doesn’t, he’s not going to feel bad about walking away if it doesn’t feel right. And considering Ansel Elgort’s recent issues, perhaps a break between the original film and the sequel is just what is needed.

Until then, you can watch “Last Night in Soho,” which is in theaters now.
