Can historical films do justice to real events and the people who experienced them? The new film “Edge of the World” is the latest feature attempting to answer that question. Set during the 1880s, this period drama explores a point in historical figure James Brooke’s life. Actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers takes on the role of Brooke. It’s not a character without controversy, something the actor has proven he can navigate in previous roles. Brooke’s true story includes a range of topics that generate heated discussions, even today. Dominic Monaghan is along for the journey as Crookshank. The actor may not be as familiar with the world of historical dramas, but his work with epic fantasy films more than makes up for that. He’s known to fans of both “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the popular series “Lost.”
‘Edge’ marks the first project from writer Ron Allyn since his 2013 effort “Java Heat.” This time, he teams with director Michael Haussman to give the films its sense of realism. Haussman honed his distinctive vision while working with artists such as Madonna and Justin Timberlake.
The Film’s Official Synopsis:
“In 1839, Brooke flees Victorian England to explore Borneo. After a pirate attack, Brooke allies with rival princes to seize a rebel fort. To save prisoners from beheading, Brooke agrees to be crowned Rajah. James begs the Royal Navy for a steamship to fight pirates, but the British want his kingdom as a colony. Makota’s pirates massacre Brooke’s capital, leaving James half-dead. To save his people, he must shed Englishness and embrace the jungle: “All of it, the beauty and the blood.”
