After recently downplaying the “Fantastic Four” rumor circulating online as “fan-casting,” actress Emily Blunt is also pouring a little cold water on the “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel that has been in development for ages. Doug Liman is attached to direct alongside co-star Tom Cruise, who is expected to return once Warner Bros. moves forward with it. The problem is, no one seems to be moving forward with it, and it’s been seven years since “Edge Of Tomorrow” was released.

While promoting “A Quiet Place Part II,” Blunt doesn’t sound sure what the ultimate fate of the sci-fi film will be despite praising the sequel’s script as “amazing.” Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Blunt said the screenplay was incredible but sounded like she was starting to lose hope in the sequel becoming a reality.
“That was an amazing script, but I don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now,” the British actress tells Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t have the straight answer on that one.”
On The Howard Stern Show, Blunt was even more cynical about the sequel’s prospects.
“We wanted to [make it]. Honestly, I think the movie’s too expensive,” she admitted. “Yeah, I don’t know how we’re going to do it. I think that it’s hard to align everyone’s schedules. I would love it. Doug Liman would love it. Tom would love it. We’d all love to do it, but I think until we figure out what’s going on with the industry – honestly, I think we need to figure out what is the next road map for the kinds of films that people want to make.”
She’s not wrong about schedules and aligning everything. Tom Cruise still has to shoot “Mission: Impossible 8” for Paramount after production delays alongside another film from director Doug Liman that will be shot in space for Universal with a budget of $200 million. There is also the chance that Disney will fast-track a sequel to “Jungle Cruise” that could become an added complication if that film turns into a franchise. The sci-fi series has arguably lost its momentum, too, given it would likely be about ten years after the fact if a sequel was ever made at this point.

In the original film, Cruise played U.S. Major William Cage, who works in the media department only to be sent to his death during a large push to fight back an alien invasion after back-talking to a superior played by Brendan Gleeson. When he dies on the battlefield, Cage is suddenly transported to the point where he was dropped into the unit after being stripped of his rank and learns that he now can relive the same day over and over. Cage seeks out Blunt’s gruff Sergeant Rita Vrataski for help, as she also had the same power before she lost it, and the pair agree to work together to defeat the aliens.
Plot details for the sequel haven’t been made public, but Doug Liman worked extensively with multiple screenwriters on various drafts of the script over the years. A post made by Liman on his Instagram account in January of 2020 showed off the extensive work in the production offices.
