Emilia Clarke Joins Marvel’s ‘Secret Invasion’ Disney+ Series

At this point, it’s no secret Marvel Studios always have great casts in their film and TV series, and if there was ever any stigma about A-listers taking on their projects, that’s long, long gone. That is to say, the cast for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ limited series, “Secret Invasion,” led by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury character, is quickly shaping up to be one of their best. Following the casting of Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and most recently, Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, “Game Of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke is joining the ensemble.

The role is being kept under wraps, and as usual, not much is known about the series at all, other than the clues of its titles and cast. “Secret Invasion” comes from a comic book storyline about Skrulls invading earth and, in some cases, impersonating characters and heroes for years with an impossible-to-tell facsimile (Skrulls are shapeshifters).  In the Marvel Universe, we’ve already seen Nick Fury working with Skrulls in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (where they impersonated Fury and Maria Hill). And Ben Mendelsohn’s character from “Captain Marvel” was obviously a Skrull alienoid as well. So, it’s clear, a similar Fury & The Skrulls storyline will take place, but how it deviates from the comics is probably significant since some of the “Secret Invasion” storylines had Skrulls mimicking major superheroes for over a decade without anyone’s knowledge.

Given Clarke hasn’t been able to break out of “Game Of Thrones” in any major way—cast in franchises like “Terminator” and “Star Wars” that could never take off—it’s not a huge surprise she might surround herself in something similarly supportive and bigger-than-the-actor-itself like Marvel. She’s not the only “Game Of Thrones” star that has turned to Marvel. Peter Dinklage had a small role in “Avengers: Infinity War,” and Kit Harington will be playing Black Knight in Marvel’s upcoming “Eternals” film by Chloe Zhao.

Kyle Bradstreet is attached to write and executive produce the series and, Kevin Feige’s Marvel film team is producing as they have for “WandaVision” and “Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

Marvel series tend to connect and overlap, and it’ll be interesting to see what movie, if any, perhaps “Captain Marvel 2,” the “Secret Invasion” series intersects with the most. [Variety]
