One of the more surprisingly lower-key upcoming Matt Damon efforts is the directorial debut of ‘Bourne’ scribe George Nolfi in “The Adjustment Bureau.”
Despite completing filming last year, little has been heard since on the Phillip K. Dick adaptation other than the fact it follows a rising politician who risks his future and defies fate to be with the woman he loves only to be kept apart by secret, mysterious forces controlling the planet’s fate.
Co-star Emily Blunt has now stepped forth to speak about the film although remained very cautious, only tip-toeing around the film’s story.
“Like all of Philip’s work, it’s about creeping under people’s paranoia,” Blunt explains to the Inquirer. “I don’t want to say too much but it deals with elements like, are we surrounded by a Big Brother regime? Are we being watched and monitored? Does fate exist or are our paths to succeed or not in life actually being manipulated by a higher power? How much are we being governed and controlled? What’s integral to the movie is a love story between my character and Matt’s who is a guy running for Senate. Yeah, that’s all I’m going to say (laughing).”
“I play a very street-smart independent tough girl who is a contemporary ballet dancer. It was quite an undertaking for me because I’ve never danced (laughing). So I trained with this extraordinary modern dance company in New York called Cedar Lake. If you are ever in New York, you must run to see their show because what they do is staggering. I trained with them for weeks on end. It’s honestly the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life.”
Interestingly, this will be the second film along with Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” to feature the world of ballerinas, both with reported sci-fi or supernatural elements. Co-starring will be the likes of Shohreh Aghdashloo, Anthony Mackie, John Slattery, Daniel Dae Kim and Michael Kelly with a late 2010 release likely for the sci-fi love tale.
Blunt also touched on her upcoming role in Rob Letterman’s adaptation of the classic “Gulliver’s Travels” tale starring Jack Black, Jason Segel, Amanda Peet, Chris O’Dowd, James Corden and Billy Connolly.
“I play a dimwitted Lilliputian princess,” the actress added. “It was really fun to play a bit of a bimbo. She’s the girliest person I’ve ever played. Jack Black was a wonderful ringleader for all of us. He had buoyant energy on the set. Even though he did a lot of green-screen scenes, he came to the set to read off-lines for all of us. He was there every day. The movie is a smart, very witty, farcical version of the Jonathan Swift novel. I wonder if those who are deeply loyal to the book might be rubbed up the wrong way with our version.”
The Nicholas Stoller and Joe Stillman scripted adaptation filmed in London last year and was responsible for Blunt’s pass on Scarlett Johansson eventual role in Jon Favreau’s “Iron Man 2.” We hope it was worth it. “Gulliver’s Travels” will hit theaters this Christmas.
