'Endless Love' Getting The Remake You've Been Waiting For From 'Country Strong' Director Shana Feste

nullRemember 1981’s “Endless Love” starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt (who he?) from Italian director Franco Zeffirelli? Well, this writer doesn’t, but that would be the case for any Brooke Shields film made before he was born. A lot of people just might remember it though, but not because of the romantic drama plot about a teenage couple whose love is continually thwarted by (as IMDb puts it) by “circumstance and accident.” So why might you remember it then? Well, there are two reasons. The first is the song’s theme – the Diana Ross and Lionel Richie song of the same name. The second is that it was the first appearance of a 19 year-old Tom Cruise on the big screen.

By all accounts the film itself was a bit of a stinker, earning six Golden Raspberry Awards at the time, however "Endless Love" (or more likely the name and association with the hit song) is obviously considered by some to carry enough name recognition for modern audiences to justify a remake. “Country Strong” director Shana Feste has been hired by Universal to helm the new version of the film, and rewrite an earlier script by Josh Safran ("Gossip Girl") which will presumably be pitched at the “Twilight” audience who will likely be yearning for more teen angst and romance after their favourite franchise comes to an end.

So who can we expect to see in this? Well if Feste decides to work with any members of her "Country Strong" cast again then maybe we could see Leighton Meester or Garrett Hedlund (providing they’re not considered too old), and we certainly wouldn’t bet against Brooke Shields agreeing to a role if they’ll have her. This is one of those remakes that won’t be in danger of infuriating fans of the original, but maybe that will be different for whoever they (inevitably) ask to cover the title song. Maybe they can get someone on board to act and sing? Miley Cyrus, anyone? You can see the entire picture below via Snag Films.
