'Escape From Pretoria' Trailer: Daniel Radcliffe Stars In True Story Of Two Men Escaping South African Prison

Since his decade-long run as the title character in the massive, global blockbuster ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, Daniel Radcliffe has been making some truly interesting career choices. While many would take the star power afforded them by starring in a franchise like ‘Harry Potter’ and continue to make expensive studio projects, the actor has followed the Robert Pattinson/Kristen Stewart school of franchise-escaping and stuck to indie films and projects that you wouldn’t expect Harry Potter to star in. The latest of which is the thriller “Escape from Pretoria.”

As seen in the new trailer for the film, “Escape from Pretoria” tells the true story of two young South African men (Radcliffe and co-star Daniel Webber), who find themselves locked up in prison during 1979 for distributing political pamphlets during the apartheid era of the country. Instead of peacefully doing their time, the two men hatch a plan to, well, escape.

As mentioned, this is yet another project starring Radcliffe that isn’t necessarily what you’d expect the ‘Harry Potter’ star to headline. Previously, he’s taken risks with projects such as “Swiss Army Man,” “Imperium,” TBS comedy series “Miracle Workers,” and “Kill Your Darlings.” Sure, not everything he touches turns to gold, as with folks like Stewart and Pattinson, but it’s clear that Radcliffe is trying to expand his horizons.

Joining Radcliffe and Webber in this film are actors Mark Leonard Winter, Ian Hart, Nathan Page, and Adam Ovidia. “Escape from Pretoria” is directed by Francis Annan, who co-wrote the script with L.H.Adams.

Currently, “Escape from Pretoria” is set to arrive in the UK in March 2020. A US/North American theatrical release has not been announced. You can watch the trailer below.
