Jim Mickle‘s “Cold In July” isn’t just set in Texas, it sweats Texas. Taking place in the 1980s, the filmmaker has great fun with the era, embracing everything from the hairstyles to the loud fashion, and he infuses it with a distinctive swagger that makes his neon slicked noir more than just a genre exercise. And some of that unique texture also comes from the film’s soundtrack, and today we have two tracks to give you a flavor of what “Cold In July” serves up.
Starring Michael C. Hall, Don Johnson, Sam Shepard and Vinessa Shaw, the film follows an ordinary man who, in the process of defending his home from a break in, shoots and kills the intruder. But things only get more complicated when the burglar’s father, an fearsome ex-con, comes looking for vengeance. And Jeff Grace‘s synth soaked score, highlighted in “Father And Son” below, is both sinister and slick. Meanwhile, electro act Dynatron keep the pulse going with “Cosmo Black.”
“Cold In July” hits VOD on opens in limited release on Friday, May 23rd. The soundtrack is available starting today.
