Unspooling his semi-autobiographical, revolutionary coming-of-age tale "Something In The Air" at the New York Film Festival this month (you can read our review here), French filmmaker Olivier Assayas isn't letting the press rounds sap all of his energy. While he hadn't officially announced his next project, the former Cahiers du cinéma critic told The Playlist in an exclusive interview that he plans to reteam with Juliette Binoche for the tentatively titled "Since Maria" which he's expected to shoot next spring.
For the most part Assayas was tight-lipped about the project, but he did stress that after two films set in the 1970s he was ready to do something "radically different." "I've written it for Juliette Binoche, it's based on her. A Juliette Binoche movie about Juliette Binoche with Juliette Binoche," he explained excitedly with a smile. "It will be in English and part of the cast will be American."
The duo worked together previously on the celebrated family-drama "Summer Hours" in 2008 and it's pretty thrilling that they will get together for another go. And for Binoche, it continues her streak of late of participating in auteur-driven projects with roles in David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" and Abbas Kiarostami's "Certified Copy," while the forthcoming "Camille Claudel, 1915" with Bruno Dumont seems to be in the can. Looks like there is a lot to forward to in the next year or so from both Assayas and Binoche.
