Transitioning from actor to director is no easy task, but it helps to surround yourself with strong talent, and that’s just what Ewan McGregor has done for “American Pastoral.” Based on the book by Phillip Roth, McGregor stars in the picture along with Jennifer Connelly, Dakota Fanning, Uzo Aduba and David Strathairn, and helping to pull all the elements together is a score by Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat. Today we have an exclusive preview of the composer’s work.

Following an American family across several decades and through social, political, and cultural upheaval, “American Pastoral” follows Seymour “Swede” Levov, a once legendary high school athlete who is now a successful businessman married to Dawn, a former beauty queen. But turmoil lurks beneath the polished veneer of Swede’s life. When his beloved daughter Merry disappears after being accused of committing a violent act, Swede dedicates himself to finding her and reuniting his family, only to make a life-changing discovery in the process. Desplat’s tender, beautiful touch is once again heard here, with this five-minute preview highlighting the composer’s ability to create truly evocative scores.
“American Pastoral” opens on October 21st, and the soundtrack will be released the same day.
