If you want to know who someone really is, sometimes it pays to talk their friends. And it’s somewhat from that angle that filmmaker Treva Wurmfeld approaches her upcoming documentary “Shepard & Dark.” And it’s an interesting peek into the life of Sam Shepard using the conduit of his lifelong friend, Johnny Dark.

With close access to Shepard and Dark, Wurmfeld began filming in 2010, just as the former had ended his relationship with Jessica Lange. Shepard and Dark have been pals since the 1960s and have become almost like brothers, staying in touch over decades that saw big changes in both their lives via letters, and with plans to have their correspondence published, the pair sat down to sort through years of memories all committed to paper. And in this exclusive clip, we see Shepard reflecting that he was once an “enemy of sentimentality,” a position that changed as he grew older and gained more life experience.

Executive produced by Joanne Woodward, “Shepard & Dark” opens in NY on September 25th and LA on October 11th. Watch the clip below.
