You’ve seen the salacious headlines more than once, about a teacher and a young student engaging in a relationship, and the scandal that follows. But beyond the headlines there are larger issues at play, about sexual dynamics, power and plain old human lust and desire. And it’s all these issues and more that writer/director Hannah Fidell explores in her feature-length debut “A Teacher.”
Premiering earlier this year at the Sudance Film Festival as part of the NEXT slate, the film centers on a Texas high school teacher (Lindsay Burdge) who has a fling with one of her teenage students (Will Brittain). But it doesn’t stop there as the relationship grows deeper, with the teacher becoming increasingly attached to the teen, even as she knows it’s wrong. It’s certainly some charged material, tackling a taboo subject, but as this exclusive teaser trailer suggests, Fidell takes it on directly and intensely.
The film will be released by Oscilloscope Laboratories later this year. Check out the trailer below.
