While there are plenty of galleries where you can go to see carefully curated selections of artwork, sometimes the most daring, interesting and fascinating stuff is found in the most unlikely of places. Certainly, filmmaker Jeremy Workman wasn’t expecting to discover the treasures Al Carbee had hidden in his ramshackle home when he first met him, but as you’ll see in the documentary for "Magical Universe," theirs was a friendship that helped uncover a singular artistic talent.
In this exclusive trailer, you’re invited into 88-year-old Carbee’s world, one where he puts Barbie dolls in elaborate dioramas, and creates complex spiritual/mystical books and artwork. But he’s not just an eccentric, with Workman’s decade-in-the-making film celebrating the creative spirit, all while the director remains one of Carbee’s few links to the outside world at large. And with awards from film festivals in Woodstock, Las Vegas, Athens and Salem, this is a movie you’ll want to keep an eye out for.
"Magical Universe" opens in theaters and on VOD on October 31st. Check out the exclusive trailer and poster below.
