One of the most intriguing movies of the year seems to have arrived out of thin air. Last week it was revealed that David Gordon Green had teamed up with Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch and shot a movie completely under the radar. "Prince Avalanche," a remake of the Icelandic film "Either Way" ("Á annan veg"), follows two highway maintenance men who work together in the barren wilderness, and chronicles their evolving friendship. We figured this might be just a low-key indie that Green will get out there before starting work this fall on his "Suspiria" remake, but now there's an exciting new twist.
Chatting with Consequence Of Sound, Munaf Rayani, guitarist for Texas post-rock favorites Explosions In The Sky, revealed that the band is tuning up Green's film. “It’s pretty serendipitous that I am speaking to you now because a film is currently being made by filmmaker David Gordon Green,” Rayani explained. “We will be scoring his latest film 'Prince Avalanche.' This particular picture is going to be exceptionally beautiful in that we’re making it with friends of ours.” The site confirmed that one of the "friends" in question is none other than David Wingo.
Both the band and Wingo have worked with Green before. The director used music from Explosions In The Sky in "All The Real Girls" and "Snow Angels," and Wingo has been a longtime collaborator of Green's, not only scoring the two aforementioned films, but "George Washington" and "The Sitter" as well. Wingo also delivered one of our favorite scores of last year for Jeff Nichols' "Take Shelter." So, are we even more excited about "Prince Avalanche"? You better believe it.
Still no word on when the film will arrive, but we hope all this activity means a fall festival bow is in the works. Could this be the return to lower-fare drama that fans of Green have long been hoping for? We'll soon see.
