First Listen: 'Where The Wild Things Are' Soundtrack

We suppose it’s inevitable, right? The Karen O and the Kids-written (her indie-rock supergroup) soundtrack to Spike Jonze’s “Where The Wild Things Are,” has leaked. The 14-track collection of songs are a mix of clipped, child-like lullabies (“Igloo,” “Cliffs”), spry, sometimes feral and jubilant pop songs (“Capsize,” “Head’s Up”), melancholy piano tracks (“Worried Shoes,” “Lost Fur”) and a few freak folk-y like droney dirges (“Hidaway”) (here’s the whole tracklist if you’re curious).

“Igloo,” the first track on the album and a song we have here below was featured in the second ‘Wild Things’ trailer and the last track from the album, “Sailing Home” is essentially a more uptempo and celebratory version of the same song. There does appear to be at least one song from the mix that we’ve heard (the song played at the beginning of the ‘WTWTA’ featurette) and that is not on the soundtrack, so maybe that means there’s more to come in Itunes, which generally has bonus tracks or maybe we’ll just hear more in the movie (and we won’t be surprised if the movie features a lot less vocal versions of the songs, but that’s just a guess; don’t forget that there’s score material in the film by Carter Burwell also and presumably it’s a more traditional score).

We’re not huge fans of the first single, “All Is Love,” it’s a bit too cutesy and the instrumental bits certainly are stronger and more emotive than the songs, but there’s some good stuff on the soundtrack that seems like it captures the wondrous innocence of childhood and the sort of cracked-heart feeling of sadness. The soundtrack hits on Tuesday, September 29 and the movie hits theaters on October 16. Hopefully our expectations are not too high, cause it’s a picture we’re greatly looking forward to. Here’s a few songs to tide you over until then:

You can also hear the song, “Hidaway,” (titled erroneously “Hideaway” here) in this new TV spot.
