Last night, we got a particularly interesting eyeful from “The Bling Ring,” with the first clip revealing Emma Watson‘s technique on a stripper pole, and today brings with it even more peeks at one of this summer’s wilder offerings.
The first looks at Leslie Mann (as the mother of two of the girls) and Gavin Rossdale (playing Ricky, a sleazy club promoter) have arrived, along with more snaps of the rest of the thieving crew, which include Taissa Farmiga, Erin Daniels, Israel Broussard, Halston Sage and Katie Chang. As you know, Sofia Coppola‘s latest follows some young kids who rob celebrity homes and party like there’s no tomorrow only to find out that there is a tomorrow and it doesn’t look very kindly upon criminals.
“I was curious about these kids growing up always aware of their audience, constantly posting pictures online,” Coppola recently said in a DGA Quarterly interview. “I thought it was such an interesting story and the quotes from the real kids really made an impression” [ed. they apparently dreamt of their own fragrance lines and reality TV shows]. I thought the story said so much about our culture today and how it can affect young people.”
“For visual references, I borrowed the cell phones of my actors and studied their Facebook and Myspace pages,” she said. Evidently many of the shots in the film look like “selfies” — cell-phone portraits shot at arm’s length. “This world isn’t as visually beautiful as some of my other films,” Coppola said of “Bling Ring” her first digital feature shot on the RED. “It’s more Pop.” As in Pop Art.”
Coppola lost her DP Harris Savides last year when he passed away far too young at the age of 55 and “The Bling Ring” will be his final film credit. The movie arrives on June 14th.
