While Toronto and Venice raised excitement levels for the fall festivals by announcing their initial lineups this week, there are plenty more movies to come. One that certainly has awards season prognosticators wondering where it’ll show up is "Truth," with the starry, true story drama now slated for an October release.
Sony Pictures Classics announced that "Zodiac" screenwriter James Vanderbilt‘s directorial debut will open on October 16th. Based on the book “Truth and Duty” by Mary Mapes, the film tells the incredible true story of how Mapes (Cate Blanchett), an award-winning CBS News journalist, and Dan Rather (Robert Redford), uncovered that a sitting U.S. president may have been AWOL from the United States National Guard for over a year during the Vietnam War. When the story blew up in their face, the ensuing scandal ruined Dan Rather’s career, nearly changed a U.S. Presidential election, and almost took down all of CBS News in the process.
Here’s where things get interesting. Hollywood Elsewhere reported a few weeks back that The Weinstein Company was planning to campaign Blanchett in the Best Actress category for Todd Haynes‘ "Carol." Presuming Blanchett also gives an awards contending performance here, does that mean Sony Pictures Classics will have to slide her into Best Supporting Actress, where she’d go up against her "Carol" co-star, Rooney Mara? It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out, and where this movie will make its big debut.
