In all the recent discussions over separating art from the artist (a discussion that, in this case, have been going on for 40 years), Roman Polanski’s has the fewest grey areas. Woody Allen and Casey Affleck, for instance, have never been convicted of crimes in a court of law (which is not to say that they didn’t do what they’ve been accused of), whereas Polanski pled guilty to engaging in unlawful sexual intercourse in a plea bargain before fleeing to France in 1978, where he’s remained ever since.

As such, it’s hard to take the news of a new Polanski film with the excitement that might otherwise greet a new film from the director of masterpieces like “Chinatown,” “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Tenant.” But nevertheless, Polanski is back with his first new movie in four years set to premiere at Cannes, albeit out of competition, and FilmTV.it have obtained a first-look image from the film.
It features the two leading ladies of “Based On A True Story,” an adaptation of a novel by Delphine de Vigan, in the shape of Polanski’s wife Emmanuelle Seigner, and the great Eva Green. The film sees a writer (Seigner) form a thorny relationship with an obsessed fan (Green), and is co-written by “Personal Shopper” helmer Olivier Assayas. The Cannes bow is a few weeks away: we’ll report back as and when we see it.
