Evidently skipping the fall film festival circuit and premiering in Australia later this month, the new Aussie crime drama “Son Of A Gun” is nonetheless on the way. The feature-length debut of award-winning short writer/director Julius Avery, ‘Son Of A Gun’ stars Ewan McGregor, Alicia Vikander and Brenton Thwaites.
New posters and photos of the movie surfaced late last night, revealing a heist picture focusing on a career criminal’s (a beardy McGregor) complicated relationship with his protegé (Thwaites). Here’s an IMDB synopsis, the contents of which is largely verified on the Cinefest Oz Film Festival site:
Locked up for a minor crime, 19 year old JR (Thwaites) quickly learns the harsh realities of prison life. Protection, if you can get it, is paramount. JR soon finds himself under the watchful eye of Australia’s most notorious criminal, Brendan Lynch (McGregor). But protection comes at a price. Lynch and his crew have plans for their young protegee. Upon release, JR must help secure Lynch’s freedom, staging a daring prison break. As a reward, he’s invited to join the crew as they plan a gold heist that promises to deliver millions. However, as things start to go wrong, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues. JR finds himself unsure of whom he can trust and on a collision course with his former mentor.
A24 has North American rights to the ‘Son Of A Gun,’ but if the film doesn’t turn up at the Toronto Film Festival as expected, it’s probably safe to assume a 2015 release. Check out the new poster and photos below.
