A couple of weeks back, it looked like bad news for Jean-Marc Valleé‘s "Demolition" — it was officially slated to be released on April 8, 2016, effectively taking it out of the Oscar season, and presumably, out of the fall festival season. However, it looks like Fox Searchlight still has a lot of confidence in the movie.
This morning, TIFF announced the drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts as their opening film and the first image from the movie has arrived. The drama follows an investment banker on downward spiral who makes a connection with a pot smoking, single mother. Here’s the official synopsis:
Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker, struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law Phil (Chris Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.
It’s interesting that a movie coming out this spring has a such a big spotlight on it. Maybe depending on the reception, Fox Searchlight may give the movie an awards qualifying run? Anything can happen.
