If you thought you’d had enough James Franco already — since December, three movies starring the actor/director have hit the big screen (“Why Him?,” “In Dubious Battle,” “The Institute“) with “The Disaster Artist” premiering at SXSW this month — get ready for a double dose. “The Wire” and “Treme” creator David Simon‘s highly anticipated “The Deuce” is on the way, and we have our first look at Franco times two in the series.
Co-starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, the drama will track the rise and legalization of pornography, from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. Franco will be playing mob friendly brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, with Gyllenhaal as Candy, a hooker who gets pulled in front of the camera. Richard Price (“The Wire,” “The Night Of”) is part of the writing staff, Michelle MacLaren (“Breaking Bad”) directed the pilot, and we’re already on board for this.
“The Deuce” hits HBO this summer. [EW]
