From riding high thanks to “The Artist,” to sinking with his follow-up “The Search,” director Michel Hazanavicius is looking to rebound back to former glories with “Redoubtable.” And to do that, he’s once again trying to bring the cinematic past to life, only instead of spinning a fictional yarn, he’s going to tell a true one.

Based on the autobiography “Un An Après” by Anne Wiazemsky, “Redoubtable” will chronicle the romance that blossomed between Jean-Luc Godard and the author/actress during the making of the 1967 film “La Chinoise,” which would eventually lead to marriage (though, they wound up divorcing in 1979, after making two more pictures together,“Week End” and “Sympathy For The Devil.”
The film has Louis Garrel playing Godard, with “Nymphomaniac” star Stacy Martin as Wiazemsky, and you can see them both in these first look images from Hazanavicius, who interestingly, says the film will be a comedy.
No release date for the movie yet, but I’d wager a safe on a Cannes berth next spring.
