In case you missed it, Redbox revealed their top 10 most rented titles of 2013 on Christmas Eve, and two films from comedian Melissa McCarthy, “The Heat” and “Identity Thief,” nabbed the top two slots. Not too shabby. Plus now you know what the rest of the country does when they rent movies. Suffice to say the “Bridesmaids” breakout actress has become a bona fide star in her own right.
There’ll be more McCarthy in 2014. While you’ll see her in “St. Vincent De Van Nuys” alongside Bill Murray, Naomi Watts and others in April, her big comedy of the year is “Tammy,” directed by her husband Ben Falcone (Air Marshall Jon from “Bridesmaids”) and co-starring Susan Sarandon. What’s it about? It focuses on a small-town woman (McCarthy playing the titular character) whose life falls apart after she experiences the one-two punch of being fired from her job and then discovering her sleazy husband in bed with another woman. She ends up hitting the road with her profane, hard-drinking grandmother (Sarandon).
“She kind of loses every reason to be tethered to this town and she wants out,” McCarthy told USA Today. “She doesn’t exactly know where to go. But she doesn’t want to be there. The only way out is with her grandmother, whom she’s not particularly fond of.” “Tammy” is Falcone’s directorial debut and he and McCarthy wrote this script, which sounds a bit like a twisted version of “Thelma & Louise.”
“I play a real creepy guy,” says Falcone. “I’m just kind of creepy, so it works.” The film also stars Allison Janney, Kathy Bates, Dan Aykroyd and Toni Collette. A first look of the film is above and “Tammy” hits theaters right in the heart of the summer on July 7th, so you know Warner Bros. has a lot of faith in its commercial comedic prospects.
