Here’s the first glimpse of Mia Wasikowska in the titular role of Cary Fukunaga’s adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre,” currently in production in the U.K.
The classic Brontë tale follows a young governess in 19th century England who falls for her employer and, while the 150 year old novel has already seen many film iterations, Fukunaga has noted that his take starring Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender will play up the novel’s darker, gothic sensibilities that has rarely been explored on the screen.
Such tones are already evident here with the combination of dark Victorian-era attire on Wasikowska in the eerie Burton-esque setting complete with light fog and wilted flora. The film sees Fukunaga reunite with “Sin Nombre” cinematographer Adriano Goldman working from a script by playwright Moira Buffini.
Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, Sally Hawkins, Imogen Poots, Holliday Grainger and Tamzin Merchant all co-star in the film which will likely see a release next year though we’d kill to see it hit by year’s end.
