One of the most anticipated films coming out next year is Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time.” Not only is it the first feature that DuVernay has released since the critically-acclaimed “Selma” in 2014, but it also is the first time a black woman has directed a film with a budget over $100 million. With that being said, it’s clear that there’s a lot of hype surrounding “A Wrinkle in Time,” and at Disney’s D23, we finally got our first look at some footage.
The film follows a teen girl who embarks on a cosmic adventure to find her long, lost father. Along the way, she meets three beings that help guide her on her adventure. The cast for this film is incredible, headlined by Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, and Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Whatsit, respectively. Joining those ladies are Storm Reid as Meg and Chris Pine as her father, Dr. Alex Murry.
Previously, “A Wrinkle in Time” was adapted into a TV movie in 2003. The result wasn’t so great. In an interview, “A Wrinkle in Time” author Madeleine L’Engle was asked quite a few years ago by Newsweek, if the TV movie met her expectations. She said simply, “Yes, I expected it to be bad, and it is.” Ouch. It’s clear that Disney is putting everything they can into this new film, so odds are, DuVernay’s adaptation will probably fare better.
“A Wrinkle in Time” opens on March 9, 2018.
