American Zoetrope is really aggressively trying to build buzz for Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming family drama (dramedy?) called “Tetro,” starring Vincent Gallo and newcomer Alden Ehrenreich.
They’ve released a trailer that has gone over very well in the blogosphere, a poster which looks equally enticing and now Apple‘s released three minutes of the film online.
The film doesn’t come out until June, but some have already seen it and given it the thumbs up. “It feels like a film from the ’30s or ’40s with its beautiful black-and-white photography and then when the scenes switch to color it just gets all that much better. Even better, it works as a film above and beyond just a visually impressive feature,” writes Rope of Silicon who note the skills of cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr.
The film chronicles the journey of a young adult (Ehrenreich) as he goes on a journey to Argentina to find his estranged younger brother (Gallo) – an exiled poet trying to distance himself from his family. Once the sibling finds his older brother and attempts reconciliation, they reflect on their troubled past with their composer father Carlo (Klaus Maria Brandauer). The film also stars Carmen Maura and Maribel Verdu.
The official synopsis is: “TETRO….is Francis Ford Coppola’s most personal film yet, arising from memories and emotions from his early life, though totally fictional. It is the bittersweet story of two brothers, of family lost and found and the conflicts and secrets within a highly creative Argentine-Italian family.”
“Tetro” opens June 11, 2009 in limited release and also will play at the Director’s Fornight at Cannes where we’re hoping to see it first.
The first three minutes are basically the credits and unsubtitled, but they do reflect the sort of dreamy, almost bewitchingly Fellini-esque mood evinced in the trailer and the score by Osvaldo Golijov sounds great. They basically show Ehrenreich’s character getting off a bus and asking for directions, but you could do worse.
