This year, you’ll see two flavors of Pixar‘s: the brand building, money printing company behind “Cars 3,” and the innovative storytellers behind the original “Coco.” And it’s certainly the latter we’re looking forward to more.
The story follows a young boy with a musical gift, who goes on an unlikely adventure, and while there will be plenty of tunes, director Lee Unkrich (“Up“), says it’s not quite a full blown song-and-dance movie. “At the end of ‘Toy Story 3,’ we had this moment where Jessie turns on the boom-box and the Gipsy Kings do a Spanish language version of ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me.’ Which, it turned out, ended up being a real precursor to this movie,” he explained to EW. Here’s the official synopsis:
Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.
Voiced by Gael García Bernal, Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, and Renée Victor, “Coco” opens on November 22nd.
