FKA Twigs is a hugely popular singer. She also happens to be an actress in her spare time, appearing in commercials and film/TV projects. And apparently, she is blending both her music and her acting in an FX series that’s in development that would also add a bit of martial arts for good measure.
Speaking to Michaela Coel as part of an interview in The Face, FKA Twigs revealed that she has recently partnered with FX on the development of a new series that is inspired by the music video for a song, “sad day,” which was released last August.

“So off the back of ‘sad day,’ a music video that I did for one of my songs off ‘Magdalene,’ I’ve developed it into a TV series and [FX] picked it up,” she teased. “So I’m currently making my first TV series.”
Twigs added, “It’s like a martial arts TV series which is very much centered around outsiders. And the idea of wanting to fit in but not being able to. I’ve been putting a lot of research into the way that the Black community and the Chinese martial arts community have a really deep connection. It goes into music: the Wu-Tang Clan came together almost through martial arts.”
The music video for “sad day,” which she mentions, is directed by Hiro Murai, an FX alum who directed multiple episodes of “Atlanta” amongst other projects. In the video, we see FKA Twigs walking around at night and she stumbles into a restaurant where she meets a mystery man. They dance, and then eventually draw martial arts swords. From there, the video shows its deep Hong Kong martial arts film roots as the characters fly around and fight in a graceful, balletic way.
Yes, a martial arts series for FX starring FKA Twigs sounds a bit bonkers on paper. But after watching the music video and knowing that the singer is a pretty solid actress (she recently appeared in “Honey Boy,” for example), the prospect is intriguing. And if she’s able to secure Murai again, then this would definitely be a series worth keeping an eye on.
