One of the most defining moments in the history of the United States occurred 50 years ago when we became the first people to set foot on the moon. [Leave your Kubrick-ian conspiracy theories out of this. For the sake of argument, we’re going to assume that everyone believes the moon landing happened.] The first steps were broadcast all over the world and signaled a huge win for the country in the space race with the Soviet Union. However, the new series, “For All Mankind,” decides to put a spin on that memorable moment by asking one simple question.
What if the US wasn’t first?
That’s the premise of the new space drama coming to Apple TV+ later this year. As seen in the trailer, the series focuses on an alternate history where the US didn’t become the first country on the moon and instead, the space race continued on, with NASA and the space program remaining one of the biggest priorities.
The new drama series stars Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, Wrenn Schmidt, Shantel VanSanten, Sarah Jones, and Jodi Balfour.
“For All Mankind” is created by Ronald D. Moore. The producer is probably best known for the reboot of “Battlestar Galactica,” which itself is viewed as some of the best sci-fi of the last 20 years. And he’s also responsible for the Starz drama “Outlander,” which is the network’s biggest hit series and a fan-favorite. Just from those bonafides, you have to imagine that “For All Mankind” could end up being the breakout series of the early Apple bunch.
“For All Mankind” is one of the several series debuting at the launch of Apple TV+ on November 1.
Here’s the synopsis:
For All Mankind is created by Emmy® Award winner Ronald D. Moore (Outlander, Battlestar Galactica), Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi. Told through the lives of NASA astronauts, engineers and their families, For All Mankind presents an aspirational world where NASA and the space program remained a priority and a focal point of our hopes and dreams.
