It seems like the world is falling into chaos while we are stuck at home, but at the very least we can take comfort in knowing we are definitely not NPCs in a video game world. That is not the case in the first clip for “Free Guy,” in which Ryan Reynolds’ non-playable-character sits inside his apartment as the outside world goes insane, and a whole lot of stuff blows up.
Reynolds took to Twitter to share the first clip, which sets the stage for the world of the film, and paints a less-than-perfect image of the violent and chaotic world his character inhabits. One curious thing to note in the clip is that it has very clear evidence of “Free Guy” still being one of the leftover Fox movies, based on the use of the former studio’s logo. Like many other films, “Free Guy” is also having its release date pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the tweet, Reynolds wrote: “Free Guy is moving to Dec. 11. Here’s a clip that’s weirdly appropriate and isn’t actually finished. We cut it a while ago (while there was still a “Fox” before 20th Century). Ignore the watermarks. And huge thanks to Aspect for cutting it.”
Directed by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”) and written by Matt Lieberman (upcoming “Scoob!”) and Zak Penn (“Ready Player One”), “Free Guy” stars Reynolds alongside Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”), Joe Keery (“Stranger Things”), Lil Rel Howery (“Get Out), and Taika Waititi (definitely not “Star Wars”).
Here’s the synopsis:
“Free Guy” tells the story of a lonely bank teller who discovers he is actually a background character in the open-world video game Free City.
The film is set to be released on December 11, 2020.
