"We have a great strategy for the DC films, which is to take these beloved characters and put them in the hands of master filmmakers," Warner Bros. exec Greg Silverman recently said. And while I would hesitate the use the phrase "master filmmaker" to describe James Wan, he’s certainly a massively successful filmmaker who knows how to deliver on a grand scale.
THR reports that Wan, the frontrunner to direct "Aquaman," has locked down a deal for the job. Wan will be overseeing the script being written by Kurt Johnstad ("300"), which means that Will Beall ("Gangster Squad") seems to have lost out, as he was penning a competing screenplay. But this not all that WB has planned for Wan.
He has also been tapped to direct the long brewing "Robotech." This one has passed through the hands of a couple directors over the years. It’s based on the Japanese anime and with shades of "Pacific Rim," it will find mankind using an alien technology that has crash landed in the South Pacific, to help fend off an alien invasion. And yes, it’s being viewed as a potential franchise.
"Aquaman" hits on July 27, 2018. But I’d presume that Wan will knock out something else before he gets to the superhero movie or the live action anime.
