After being delayed for nearly two years, FX‘s drama series “The Old Man” is finally set to return on June 17, with streaming availability the next day on Hulu. Production had been shut down due to the usual Covid complications, but also had been delayed because of lead actor Jeff Bridges‘ cancer scare. Thankfully, the actor has received a clean bill of health. “The Old Man” spent two years at the top of our Most Anticipated TV list after it was first announced in the summer of 2019.
The CIA thriller series is based on Thomas Perry’s bestselling novel and was created for television by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine. Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man‘ director Jon Watts is an executive producer and directed the first two episodes. The series feels like a return to his thriller roots, hewing closer in subject matter to Watt’s 2015 Sundance breakout film, “Cop Car.”

In the series, Bridges plays ex-CIA operative Dan Chase, who fled his former life to live off the grid, only to be coerced into returning years later after an assassination attempt, forcing him to face his past. Chase must also evade FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper’s (John Lithgow), attempts to bring him in due to their shared, complex history.
When apprehending Chase naturally proves more difficult than expected, special ops contractor Julian Carson (Gbenga Akinnagbe) is sent to hunt him down. Aiding Chase is his landlord Zoe McDonald (Amy Brenneman), CIA Special Agent Raymond Waters (E.J. Bonilla), and Chase’s protégé Angela Adams (Alia Shawkat).
